Abstract

This paper is devoted to hedging and how it is expressed in Russian and Egyptian political discourse. Hedging is a comparatively new term in linguistics. It is part of linguistic research on communication theory. The article analyzes the most and least frequent hedges used in the speech of the former presidents of the Russian Federation and Egypt (D. Medvedev and H. Mubarak) with an emphasis on linguistic methods and strategies for expressing hedging.
Using this linguistic method in political discourse is determined by the need of the speaker to moderate his evaluation of certain events or objects, his disagreement with the audience, as well as to shed responsibility for his view in cases when categorical statements are inappropriate.
