Abstract

This research aims to clarify the phonetic characteristics of the Egyptian vernacular and its phonological rules. That is through analyzing the proverbs contained in the book “Al'amthal Aleamiya” by Ahmed Taymour Pasha (1871-1930 AD), as a model for the Egyptian vernacular language. This generative phonological analysis reveals the transformative phonetic rules that governed the structures of the vocabulary of those proverbs.
The research depends on the descriptive approach, and Chomsky & Halle's (1968) generative phonology theory.
The study is divided into an introduction, a theoretical introduction: The Egyptian Vernacular language, Generative Phonology, applied research, which includes an analysis of the structures of some vernacular sayings in the light of phonological rules, and a conclusion with the most important results of the study.
