Abstract

This paper studies the topic of informativity in the field of textual linguistics as one of Robert de Beaugrand's seven Standards of Textuality, about the extent to which text is expected versus unexpected, and the extent to which it is known versus unknown to recipients. This study aims to introduce informativity theory in text linguistics as developed by Robert de Beaugrand and to clarify related concepts and terminology. Because the informativity standard varies from one text to another based on text type, the study will address manifestations of informativity through two different types of text. It will also highlight the effect of these manifestations on the recipient.
