Abstract

The research demonstrates the impact of social media on Italian literature, through a linguistic and stylistic study of the digital novel "The girl with a flower in her hair", written by the young Italian Davide Romagnoni. The novel represents a new literary form, where the writer divides his novel into episodes that tell the details of the meeting between the two protagonists in Milan and presents them only through SMSes to replace the narrator. The writer replaces the traditional form of paper fiction with a new digital form by publishing his novel on the website (romanzodigitale.it) and on Facebook and Twitter.
Romagnoni uses an encrypted and shortened language full of abbreviations created by social media users. In addition, he mixes these linguistic forms with semiotic signs, such as adding emojis and images to produce a new form of language that depends on the linguistic context to reach the intended meaning.
