Abstract

“The Lady with the Painted Hand” by Christine Wunnicke is a novel that refers to the cultural coexistence between two different worldviews, one German and the other Persian. This research aims to study the cases of misunderstanding and their linguistic and cultural reasons in the interactive situations between the two main characters in the novel. The research follows two levels of analysis, namely, a cultural contrastive approach which compares cultures and addresses communication problems in terms of differences in cultural symbols such as thinking style, selected topics, and how to manage dialogue. This helps shed light on many cultural differences between East and West. The second level of analysis is conducted at the communicative-pragmatic level, which illustrates the linguistic and semantic problems that arise from the use of language that is not understood by one of the communicative parties, or the use of words that carry more than one meaning.
