This article argues that the word-formation characteristics of the Chinese language can directly reflect on the teaching method of Chinese vocabulary. It refers – in the first point – to the word structure as a concept from a linguistics point of view, then discusses the influence of “character-based” theory on Chinese word structure characteristics, as well as analyzing the types of relationships between word characters on a grammatical and semantic basis. Finally, it analyzes the advantages of adopting Chinese vocabulary teaching based on character as the word unit and word structure for different levels. The author believes that teaching Chinese words, whether for junior students or intermediate and advanced students, should implement the "character-based" rather than "word-based" theory, and we should also introduce the characteristics and regulations of Chinese word formation to students. This shall allow students to master the principles of Chinese words, and open up new perspectives for understanding Chinese culture.
