MT of literary text from Chinese into Arabic, considering its comparison with human translation: Challenges and solutions

Abstract

Human translation of literary texts depends on the translator's ability to understand the literary text in the source language and then convey its meanings in a way that consistent with the target language. This differs from machine translation, which uses computational applications and sometimes produces literal translation that do not match human translation. However, the rapid progress and development occurring in machine translation applications gives us hope that this type of translation could become a viable tool for converting literary texts with unprecedented efficiency. This paper highlights the challenges faced by machine translation of literary texts from Chinese to Arabic in terms of meaning, structure, and aesthetic taste, applied to examples from the Arabic translation of the novel Cries in the Drizzle. The goal is to demonstrate the relative potential of machine in literary translation. in addition to identifying the limitations of machine translation, following this, appropriate solutions will be proposed.
