Abstract

This study explores how time functions in literature, specifically examining Egyptian writer Reem Bassiouni’s use of time in her novel Mario and Abu Abbas. Time is crucial in shaping the theme, language, and form of a novel, and Guenette’s three levels of narrative time provide the framework for this analysis. The study focuses on how Bassiouni employs narrative techniques such as foregrounding and delay to create temporal overlaps, enhancing the artistic and aesthetic impact of the novel. The research is structured into two main sections: the first investigates "retrospection technology," which addresses the presentation of past events, while the second explores "anticipation technology," which focuses on the prediction of future events. These techniques influence the flow and order of events, fostering a dynamic interaction with the reader and preventing a monotonous passage of time. By incorporating these methods, Bassiouni brings depth to the narrative, revealing the development of events more effectively. The study concludes with a summary of findings and a list of sources and references.
