The methods of abridgement in lexicography– an applied study on the linguistic lexicons of the Arabic language Academy in Cairo (the big, the Collegiate, and the Concise)
The study seeks to identify the lexical methods used by lexicographers to compose smaller lexicons, and what should be excluded from the lexicon when making a short one. The study has chosen three lexicons developed by the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo. It was produced by a group of specialized scholars. The study follows the descriptive approach, to identify the ways of conciseness used in them. The study has reached several conclusions, including: The idea of conciseness was known and applied in ancient times, and that there are several methods in summarizing; general, and special.
